FILM PROGRAM

In this intensive hands-on program students get an overview of film production from ideation to post-production. Participants produce a short film, which they have written, directed and edited. These student-filmmakers learn basic screenwriting techniques, including story structure and formatting, as they develop and shape their film. Upon completion of the script the focus shifts to pre-production: casting, location scouting, and learning basic camera skills.

Students shoot their films at the beginning of the second week, working collaboratively with their classmates. When production wraps students spend two days in the editing room completing their films and adding sound design elements.

The session concludes with a final screening and award ceremony.

RECORDING ARTS PROGRAM

Students will begin the first week with an introduction to sound systems used for the recording and playback of professional audio. Topics and collaborative hands-on training include: an overview of the music recording control room and studios, signal flow, operating level, gain structure, basic acoustic principles, microphones, microphone preamplifiers, equalizers, compressors, and the concepts and methodologies of multi-track recording. Students will also engage in aural awareness and critical listening exercises. They will then move to the Digital Audio Workstation Lab where computer-based, random-access audio production will be explored including editing, automation, and digital signal processing.

The entire second week will be devoted to tracking, overdubs, and mixing sessions of a 4-6 piece pop ensemble. As the Institute concludes, students create compact discs of their projects to Red Book Standard specifications.

VFX & ANIMATION PROGRAM

In this fast paced hands-on program students get an introduction to the world of 3d animation and creating characters. Participants create a short animation using a 3D character they created. These students learn basic 3d modeling and animation techniques as well as how to light their characters in a dramatic and attractive way.

The sessions break down as follows:
Week 1 students learn to model and texture and light a 3d character they help design.
Week 2 the students learn to light the character and make it move, finally creating a QuickTime movie and still images of their character.

The last session concludes with a final screening of all student created animations.

GAME DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

During this fast-paced two week program, students get an immersive experience in the growing opportunities in the game industry. They will explore the wide range of skills necessary to evolve from gamer to game developer.

Beginning with a survey of the history of the game industry, followed by a detailed critical analysis of the evolution of technology and game content, participants are introduced to the production process in modern game development. From there, they work in teams to build original game designs, along with physical prototypes. They learn to balance play mechanics and game narrative while employing a variety of iterative design techniques.

The session concludes with final individual game design presentations and a game design award ceremony.
