These are some of the words and phrases that define an educational experience in the Broadcast Media program at Flashpoint Academy.

Broadcast Media Program Objectives:

At Flashpoint Academy, Broadcast Media students will learn from professionals, within a real world setting. Students are immersed in hands-on classes, developing skills as producers and directors, shooting and editing, to create broadcast documentaries, music videos, news, sports and entertainment features. Field production involves HD, tapeless acquisition, using Panasonic P2 cameras, and nonlinear editing on Final Cut Pro. Production teams also produce HD work in a professional, multi-camera studio, with streaming-webcast capabilities. Students will develop a competitive reel and portfolio, reflecting well rounded skills and knowledge, and take advantage of the many job opportunities in the expanding broadcast industry.


BROADCAST MEDIA FACULTY

Brian Read, Director, Broadcast Media

Biography

Brian K. Read received his B.A. in Broadcasting & Film from the University of Iowa, and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College, Chicago. His background combines over twenty years of teaching with an active freelance career, as a director and lighting cameraman. Most recently, he was Director Of Broadcast Operations for the University of California, Irvine. Production credits include: Director for the live-concert video by Muriel Anderson, A Guitarscape Planet, the first original music release on Blu-Ray HD-DVD, and Director of Photography for the Crown Fountain project, capturing over 750 of the faces appearing on the 35 foot HD screens of the fountain in Chicago's Millennium Park. As a sports cameraman, he has covered over twenty years of Chicago Cubs and White Sox baseball, and Bulls basketball for WGN, Ch.9 in Chicago, as well as Chicago Fire soccer for Fox Sports.

PROGRAM TOOLS & RESOURCES

Software: Apple Suite of post-production software, including Final Cut Pro, Motion, and LiveType.
Hardware: Panasonic HVX-200 HD cameras, Arriflex lighting kits, lavaliere and shotgun microphones, and a fully equipped, multi-camera studio, with web-streaming capabilities.


PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Year One
Broadcast Media is evolving at a faster pace than ever before, and the changes are bringing with them new opportunities for exciting careers. Students are immersed in the latest forms of broadcasting, including High Definition production, streaming media, interactive television, podcasting, vlogs, RSS feeds, and emergent forms of digital distribution, producing broadcasts for virtual worlds and avatars. Working professionals provide hands-on experience in all aspects of production, shooting with Panasonic HD/P2 cameras, editing with Final Cut Pro, and Avid nonlinear systems. Students produce programs in a fully equipped broadcast studio, to create streaming broadcasts on the web. The digital revolution is about reinventing the art of visual storytelling, Here, students and faculty are exploring new methods of producing and directing, developing strategies for narrowcasting to new audiences; at Flashpoint Academy, Its all part of the first year of our program.

Year Two


Year two, let the synergy begin! Flashpoint Studios opens up collaboration between professionals and students, working together to create programs ranging from news, documentaries, features and entertainment, to live-concert music videos, and experimental production for live, virtual gaming environments. Programs are multi-purposed, for distribution over all forms of broadcast media. Writing, producing, directing, shooting, editing, graphics, lighting and sound, plus marketing and business strategies, packaging and distribution, audience measurement and feedback; all aspects of Broadcast Media are focused on graduating students with the skills, the passion, and a dynamic portfolio of work with which to kick-start their careers.
