NBCCHICAGO, FLASHPOINT ACADEMY AND DEW TOUR "RAMP UP!"
Chicago (June 26, 2009)
NBCChicago.com and NBC5 have partnered with Chicago’s Flashpoint Academy, who has created an exclusive BMX video game in conjunction with the Dew Tour. The Dew Tour is making its first appearance in Chicago this weekend and this exclusive on-line game will only be available on nbcchicago.com.
Ramping Up! is a time-based racing challenge where players jump over ramps and weave between obstacles to reach the finish line as quickly as possible. Players control a BMX bike in the game, and during the course of play, they pedal it and steer it through the challenging racing course.
The Nike 6.0 BMX Open will be held in the south end of Chicago’s Grant Park, featuring Dew Tour staples BMX park, vert and dirt disciplines on June 26 and 27. NBC Sports will cover the event in a special that will air on NBC 5 on Saturday at 1P.
“We are excited to be working with Flashpoint Academy and developing this exclusive on-line game for Dew Tour, said Frank Whittaker, Station Manager and VP of News for NBC5. “This is a great way for us to provide a new and unique platform for our on-line audience to experience and we look forward to other collaborations with Flashpoint.
This Flash-based game can be played in any web browser, and was designed and developed by the Flashpoint Studios Game Team at Flashpoint Academy.
Faculty and students, including first year game development student Peter Stilwell and recording arts students Hubert Campbell and Sean McGivern were the core of the development team.
“We’re thrilled for this opportunity to work with NBC and the Dew Tour to give our students and the Flashpoint Studios Game Team a professional portfolio. This student effort further propels them toward very bright careers in interactive media,“ said Simeon Peebler, Chair of Game Development for Flashpoint Academy.
The Dew Tour is entering its fifth year and is the most watched and attended action sports property in the world. Attendance for the 2008 Dew Tour totaled nearly 275,000 and an average of 49 million viewers tuned in via NBC, USA, MTV and MTV2. The top athletes in the world will take part in this year’s Tour, all competing for the highly coveted Dew Cup that will be awarded in Orlando at season’s end to champions in each of the six disciplines
