John Murray Named Chair Of Recording Arts

John Murray has worked professionally in film and video sound postproduction for 24 years designing and mixing award-winning soundtracks for features, documentaries, shorts, and advertising commercials. In 1990, he began a complementary career in higher education, teaching recording, audio production, and film sound editorial first at Xavier University, and since 1994 at Columbia College Chicago. In 2000, Mr. Murray was granted an 18 month Artist-in-Residence position where he began to develop and administer curriculum and assessment for the Audio Arts and Acoustics Department. He was subsequently named Director of the Audio for Visual Media program, a collaborative discipline with the Film and Video Department within the School of Media Arts at Columbia.

In 1997, Mr. Murray created the company JM Audio Services, specializing in remote recording and archival of orchestral, choral, and acoustic music performed in natural spaces. His work has resulted in numerous compact disc releases and has been broadcast on classical music stations nationwide on such programs as National Public Radios Performance Today.

He now brings his steadfast commitment to aural aesthetics and excitement for technology-based education to Flashpoint, The Academy of Media Arts and Sciences as Chair of Recording Arts.
